360º Strategic Deign for laparoscopic simulation training

Winco Pro is the result of an ambitious RDI project required by Medical Simulator SL (Spain) to the IED Madrid Design School, for developing a Laparoscopic Simulator System which included Hardware, Software, UX and visual interface, naming and branding Design. The whole ecosystem.

As former IED Madrid Design School director, Iván Vidal had the opportunity to create a design team with closer professors, such as the industrial designer Frederic Misik, the UX Designer José Pajares the product engineer Carlos Alarcón and a group of IED alumni: Alex D`Alessio, Jose Antonio Camacho and Diego Lara. The challenge was to create an affordable and intuitive laparoscopic simulator system for the universities, surgery trainees and trainers. It includes the essential functionality and interfaces for laparoscopic training using the FSL (Fundamental of Laparoscopic System) technology. This project flowed on three branch: Brand Design, Software and UX interface Design and Hardware / Industrial Design.

Winco Pro is the result of an ambitious project required by Medical Simulator SL (Spain) to develop a Laparoscopic simulator system which includes Hardware, Software, interface, naming, branding and identity Design. As director of IED Design School at IED Madrid, I assumed personally the design direction of this beautiful project with a team of more than 20 people involved, including three alumni and three teachers.

Branding and naming

WINCO from the syllables WIN (to see inside, to see through), and the CO (playing with the laparoscopic sound). Then, the logotype which represents the tools (the W) and the window (the circle). Pro, belongs to the Professional series. One of the three versions available.


After user and unboxing experience were tested an Assembly Guide was designed, improving product and packaging solutions.

After two years of development, hundred of hours, many proposals, meetings and testing sessions with professional users the first funcional prototypes were built and tested. Until today Winco Pro is evolving continuously and is a successful Laparoscopic Simulator sold in the Spanish, Portuguese and international market.

Winco Pro is a new competitive simulator which covers the client premises and philosophy. As a part of a product family, Winco Pro is the first in house designed, developed and commercialised device of a serie of simulators of the Health Simulation business unit of Medical Simulator SL.

All 3D modeling was made in Solid Works and Rhinoceros and prototyped from paper to metal. All the engineering, software and hardware interfaces and electronic components was a joint work between Designers and Medical Simulator engineers.

Winco Pro received the BID_2018 Design Award mention as best Innovation and Design project.
